Description

Enjoy the bold flavors of this sizzling Chinese pepper steak with onions. Thinly sliced beef marinated in a savory sauce, stir-fried with colorful bell peppers and onions, and served over steamed white rice.

Ingredients

Scale

For the marinade:

  • 1 pound flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar

For the stir-fry:

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper (or to taste)
  • ½ cup beef broth or water
  • Cooked white rice, for serving

Instructions

  1. Marinate the beef: In a bowl, combine sliced beef with soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, cornstarch, and rice vinegar. Marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Prepare the stir-fry: Sear marinated beef in a hot skillet until browned. Set aside. Stir-fry bell peppers, onions, and garlic. Return beef to the pan, season with black pepper, and add beef broth. Cook until sauce thickens.
  3. Serve: Enjoy the pepper steak over steamed white rice.

Notes

  • To ensure tender beef, slice it thinly against the grain.
  • Use low-sodium soy sauce for better salt control.
  • For a spicy variation, add chili flakes to the dish.
