Dough Ingredients
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- ¾ cup warm water (110°F)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or melted butter
- ½ to 1 cup finely chopped onion (yellow or sweet)
Optional Seasonings
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dried herbs (thyme or rosemary)
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast: In a large bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let this mixture sit for 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is activated and ready.
- Prepare the Dough: Add the all-purpose flour, salt, olive oil (or melted butter), and finely chopped onions to the yeast mixture. If using, add garlic powder and dried herbs. Mix until a dough forms, then knead by hand for 8 to 10 minutes or with an electric mixer for 5 to 6 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Let the Dough Rise: Transfer the kneaded dough to a lightly greased bowl and cover it with a towel. Place it in a warm spot and let it rise for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
- Shape and Second Rise: Punch down the risen dough to remove air bubbles. Shape the dough into a loaf or rolls and place it into a greased loaf pan or onto a baking sheet. Cover and let it rise again for 30 to 45 minutes until it puffs up.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the shaped dough for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the bread from the oven and transfer it to a wire rack. Let it cool for at least 10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with butter or use as a base for sandwiches.
Notes
- For sweeter flavor, caramelize the onions before adding them to the dough.
- If you prefer a stronger onion taste, increase the amount up to 1 cup finely chopped.
- You can substitute olive oil with melted butter for a richer flavor.
- Ensure the water temperature is about 110°F for effective yeast activation.
- Store the bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage.
