Description

This classic Salisbury Steak recipe features tender ground beef patties smothered in a rich, savory mushroom-style gravy. Perfectly browned and simmered in a homemade beef gravy with Worcestershire sauce and aromatic seasonings, these steaks make a comforting and hearty meal to enjoy any night of the week.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

For Frying

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

For Gravy

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mixture: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined to avoid overworking the meat, which helps keep the patties tender.
  2. Form Patties: Shape the mixture into 4-6 oval-shaped patties, ensuring they are evenly sized for uniform cooking.
  3. Brown Patties: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, until browned and cooked through. Remove patties from the skillet and set aside to rest.
  4. Make the Gravy Roux: In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for about 1 minute while stirring constantly to create a roux, which will thicken the gravy.
  5. Add Liquids and Seasonings: Gradually whisk in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Continue whisking until the gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
  6. Simmer Patties in Gravy: Return the browned patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5-7 minutes, allowing the patties to absorb the flavorful gravy and become tender.
  7. Serve: Plate the Salisbury steaks and generously spoon the gravy on top. Serve alongside mashed potatoes, rice, or your preferred side dish for a complete meal. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Do not overmix the meat mixture to keep the patties tender.
  • Use 80/20 ground beef for best flavor and juiciness.
  • Make sure the skillet is hot before adding the patties to achieve a good sear.
  • You can add sliced mushrooms to the gravy for extra flavor if desired.
  • Leftover Salisbury steak freezes well; store in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
