Description

Delight your furry friend with these homemade peanut butter dog treats that are simple to make and full of wholesome ingredients. This recipe uses whole wheat flour and natural peanut butter, combined into a stiff dough, baked to golden perfection, and finished with a delicious peanut butter and honey frosting. Perfect for rewarding your dog with a healthy and tasty snack made right in your oven.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2½ cups whole wheat flour (300 grams)
  • â…“ cup cornstarch (37 grams) (can also use potato starch or arrowroot powder)

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 large egg (50 grams)
  • 1 cup peanut butter (270 grams)
  • 1 cup water (227 grams)
  • 2 tablespoons honey (43 grams)
  • 3-4 tablespoons hot water (43-57 grams)

Frosting Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter (34 grams)
  • 1 tablespoon honey (21 grams)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  2. Make Dough: In a large bowl, mix the whole wheat flour and egg together. Then add the peanut butter, water, and honey. Stir the mixture until a stiff, sticky dough forms. It may be easier to use your hands or a mixer with a paddle attachment to combine fully.
  3. Roll and Cut Shapes: Dust a clean surface lightly with flour and roll out the dough to about ½-inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to create fun shapes, keeping in mind these treats don’t spread or rise much during baking.
  4. Bake Treats: Place the cutouts on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 18-20 minutes until the treats are golden brown. Adjust time if cookies are smaller to avoid burning the bottom.
  5. Prepare Frosting: In a microwavable bowl, combine 2 tablespoons peanut butter and 1 tablespoon honey, microwaving in 15-second increments and stirring until melted and smooth.
  6. Mix Frosting Base: Transfer the melted peanut butter and honey mixture to a bowl with the cornstarch and stir until just combined.
  7. Adjust Frosting Consistency: Gradually add hot water, one tablespoon at a time, stirring until the frosting reaches the desired thickness—more water for thinner icing.
  8. Pipe Designs: Spoon the frosting into a piping bag and decorate the cooled treats with your preferred designs.
  9. Finish Treats: Optionally, coat the treats again with a layer of the peanut butter and honey frosting mixture to make them extra enticing for your dog.

Notes

  • Use natural, unsweetened peanut butter that does not contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
  • Whole wheat flour adds fiber and nutrients, but can be substituted with oat flour for gluten-sensitive dogs.
  • Ensure treats are cooled completely before frosting.
  • Store treats in an airtight container for up to two weeks or freeze for longer freshness.
  • Adjust baking time according to size and thickness of treats to prevent burning.
