Ingredients
Scale
Dough
- 1 cup active sourdough starter
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
Topping
- 1 tablespoon melted butter
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
Instructions
- Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the sourdough starter, warm water, sugar, and olive oil until well mixed. Add the flour, salt, and garlic powder, stirring until a soft dough forms.
- Knead Dough: On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for 5 to 7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise for about 1 hour or until puffy.
- Preheat Oven: Set the oven to 425°F (220°C) to preheat while you prepare the breadsticks.
- Shape Dough: Roll the risen dough into a rectangle roughly 10 by 14 inches and transfer it to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Add Toppings: Brush the dough surface evenly with melted butter, then sprinkle mozzarella, parmesan, and dried Italian seasoning over the top.
- Score Breadsticks: Using a pizza cutter, lightly score the dough into breadstick shapes without cutting all the way through.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes until the breadsticks are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly and melted.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the breadsticks to cool slightly before fully cutting along the scored lines and serving warm.
Notes
- You can replace the mozzarella with cheddar or a cheese blend for a stronger cheese flavor.
- For extra browning and crispiness, switch the oven to broil during the last 1 to 2 minutes of baking, watching closely to avoid burning.
