Description

These Golden Sourdough Cheesy Breadsticks are a deliciously soft and flavorful appetizer made with a tangy sourdough starter, garlic, and a blend of mozzarella and parmesan cheeses. Perfectly baked until golden with a bubbly cheese topping and Italian seasoning, they’re ideal for serving warm alongside your favorite dips or meals.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 1 cup active sourdough starter
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Topping

  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning

Instructions

  1. Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the sourdough starter, warm water, sugar, and olive oil until well mixed. Add the flour, salt, and garlic powder, stirring until a soft dough forms.
  2. Knead Dough: On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for 5 to 7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  3. First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise for about 1 hour or until puffy.
  4. Preheat Oven: Set the oven to 425°F (220°C) to preheat while you prepare the breadsticks.
  5. Shape Dough: Roll the risen dough into a rectangle roughly 10 by 14 inches and transfer it to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Add Toppings: Brush the dough surface evenly with melted butter, then sprinkle mozzarella, parmesan, and dried Italian seasoning over the top.
  7. Score Breadsticks: Using a pizza cutter, lightly score the dough into breadstick shapes without cutting all the way through.
  8. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes until the breadsticks are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly and melted.
  9. Cool and Serve: Allow the breadsticks to cool slightly before fully cutting along the scored lines and serving warm.

Notes

  • You can replace the mozzarella with cheddar or a cheese blend for a stronger cheese flavor.
  • For extra browning and crispiness, switch the oven to broil during the last 1 to 2 minutes of baking, watching closely to avoid burning.
