Description

This Garlic Butter Steak and Potato Foil Packets recipe offers a delicious and easy way to enjoy a hearty meal made with tender sirloin steak, baby potatoes, and flavorful garlic butter. Perfect for grilling or baking, these foil packets lock in the juices and flavors, making cleanup a breeze.

Ingredients

Scale

Steak and Vegetables

  • 1 ½ lbs top sirloin steak, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 lb baby potatoes, halved or quartered
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced

Seasonings and Extras

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 4 tbsp butter, cubed

Instructions

  1. Par-boil the potatoes: Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add the baby potatoes and cook for 5 minutes. Drain and let cool for 10 minutes to partially soften them before assembling the packets.
  2. Prepare the steak: Cut the steak into bite-sized pieces. Optionally marinate with olive oil, garlic, and seasonings for extra flavor to enhance the meat’s taste.
  3. Combine ingredients: In a large bowl, toss the par-boiled potatoes, steak pieces, sliced onion, olive oil, fresh parsley, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper until everything is evenly coated.
  4. Assemble foil packets: Lay out 4 pieces of aluminum foil, approximately 12×12 inches each. Evenly divide the steak and potato mixture among them, placing the portions in the center of each sheet. Top each with cubed butter to melt inside during cooking.
  5. Seal the packets: Fold the long edges of the foil over the mixture first, then fold the shorter edges tightly to create a secure seal that traps steam and flavor.
  6. Cook the packets – Grilling method: Place the sealed foil packets on a grill or over a campfire using medium-high heat. Cook for 8–10 minutes per side, ensuring even cooking and tenderizing of steak and potatoes.
  7. Cook the packets – Oven method: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Place the foil packets on a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes. For extra crispiness, carefully open the packets and broil for an additional 1–2 minutes.
  8. Serve: Carefully open the foil packets to avoid steam burns. Serve warm and garnish with extra fresh parsley if desired for a fresh finish.

Notes

  • Par-boiling potatoes is optional but recommended to ensure they cook through inside the foil packets.
  • You can customize the seasoning by adding your favorite herbs or spices.
  • Foil packets can be cooked on a grill, campfire, or oven based on your preference and available equipment.
  • Make sure the foil is tightly sealed to prevent juices from leaking and to maintain moisture inside.
  • Use top sirloin steak for tenderness; other cuts may work but adjust cooking time accordingly.
