Description

This easy homemade tomato jam is a sweet and tangy preserve made from fresh tomatoes, onions, and a blend of spices. Slow-cooked to a thick, jam-like consistency, it’s perfect for adding a burst of flavor to sandwiches, cheeses, and grilled meats.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 3 ½ pounds tomatoes, cored, chopped, and most seeds removed
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon coriander
  • ¼ teaspoon cumin
  • ¼ cup cider vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: Place the chopped tomatoes, diced onion, brown sugar, granulated sugar, salt, coriander, cumin, cider vinegar, and lemon juice into a dutch oven. Make sure all ingredients are evenly distributed to ensure consistent cooking.
  2. Cook the Jam: Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to medium-low. Allow the mixture to simmer gently, stirring occasionally, for at least three hours until the jam thickens to your desired consistency.
  3. Finish and Store: Once thickened, you can either proceed to preserve the tomato jam by canning it in a hot water bath or let it cool and store it in the refrigerator for up to three weeks.

Notes

  • Removing most of the tomato seeds helps reduce bitterness and results in a smoother jam.
  • Stir occasionally during cooking to prevent the jam from sticking to the bottom of the pot and burning.
  • If you prefer a spicier jam, consider adding a pinch of chili flakes during the simmering stage.
  • The jam can be canned using sterilized jars and processed in a hot water bath for long-term storage.
