Description

This classic Cream Cheese Frosting is smooth, rich, and perfectly sweetened, making it an ideal topping for cupcakes, layer cakes, and other baked treats. Made with softened butter, cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and a hint of salt, this frosting is easy to prepare and yields a creamy texture that’s light and spreadable.

Ingredients

Scale

Frosting Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter (softened and cut into pieces)
  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened and cut into pieces)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Beat Butter: Place the softened butter into a large mixing bowl. Using an electric mixer, beat the butter until smooth and creamy. Then increase the speed to high and beat for about 1 minute until the butter lightens in color and texture.
  2. Add Cream Cheese: Add the softened cream cheese pieces to the bowl and beat on medium speed just until combined. Be sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl to incorporate all ingredients evenly.
  3. Incorporate Vanilla and Salt: Pour in the vanilla extract and sprinkle in the salt. Beat until these are fully incorporated into the mixture, ensuring a well-balanced flavor base.
  4. Add Powdered Sugar: Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed after each addition until the sugar is fully incorporated. Once all the sugar has been added, increase the mixer speed to high and beat for an additional 2 to 3 minutes until the frosting becomes whipped, thick, and easily spreadable. Scrape down the bowl occasionally to ensure everything is thoroughly blended.

Notes

  • For best results, ensure both butter and cream cheese are softened to room temperature before starting.
  • If the frosting is too soft, chill it in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes before using.
  • This frosting pairs wonderfully with carrot cakes, red velvet cakes, and spice cakes.
  • Store leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Bring to room temperature and rewhip before use if it becomes too firm.
  • You can adjust the sweetness by reducing the powdered sugar slightly or adding a teaspoon of lemon juice for a tangier flavor.
