Description

A refreshing and classic Cos Wedge Salad featuring crisp romaine lettuce quarters topped with cherry tomatoes, crumbled bacon, red onion, blue cheese, and fresh chives, all drizzled with a creamy, tangy dressing made from sour cream, mayonnaise, and buttermilk. Perfect as a light lunch or a side dish, with options to customize for vegetarian or lighter versions.

Ingredients

Scale

Salad

  • 2 heads cos (romaine) lettuce, cut lengthwise into quarters
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 4 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • ½ small red onion, thinly sliced
  • ½ cup blue cheese crumbles
  • ¼ cup chopped fresh chives
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Dressing

  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup buttermilk (or milk for a thinner consistency)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dressing: In a bowl, whisk together the sour cream, mayonnaise, buttermilk, lemon juice, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper until smooth. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. Chill the dressing in the refrigerator until ready to use.
  2. Prepare the Lettuce: Cut each head of cos lettuce into quarters lengthwise, rinse under cold water to clean, and then pat dry thoroughly to prevent sogginess.
  3. Assemble the Salad: Arrange the lettuce wedges on a large serving platter or individual plates. Drizzle the dressing evenly over each wedge.
  4. Add Toppings: Scatter the halved cherry tomatoes, crumbled bacon, thinly sliced red onion, blue cheese crumbles, and chopped fresh chives over the dressed wedges.
  5. Season and Serve: Finish the salad with a sprinkle of salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Serve immediately to enjoy the crisp freshness and creamy textures.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, omit the bacon or substitute with plant-based bacon bits.
  • If desired, substitute the dressing with ranch or a lighter yogurt-based dressing for a lighter option.
  • Grilling the lettuce wedges briefly on a grill or skillet can add a smoky flavor and slight char for variation.
