Ingredients
Scale
Bread and Butter
- 1 loaf Italian bread
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 tsp garlic salt
Sloppy Joe Filling
- 1 lb ground beef
- ¼ cup yellow onion, finely chopped
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp yellow mustard
- ¾ cup ketchup
- ½ tsp kosher salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- ½ cup water
Toppings and Garnish
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare Garlic Butter Spread: In a small bowl, combine the softened unsalted butter with garlic salt. Mix until well combined to create a flavorful garlic butter spread.
- Toast the Italian Bread: Slice the Italian bread loaf into desired portions. Spread the prepared garlic butter evenly on one side of each slice. Toast the bread slices in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes or until golden and fragrant. Remove and set aside.
- Cook Ground Beef Mixture: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and finely chopped yellow onion. Cook until the beef is browned and onions have softened, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess fat.
- Add Seasonings and Sauce: Stir in garlic powder, yellow mustard, ketchup, kosher salt, black pepper, and water into the beef mixture. Simmer on medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens and becomes saucy, roughly 5-7 minutes.
- Assemble the Sloppy Joe Melts: Spoon the beef mixture generously onto the toasted garlic bread slices. Top each with a mix of shredded mozzarella and sharp cheddar cheeses.
- Melt the Cheese: Place the assembled melts back into the oven at 375°F (190°C) for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is fully melted and bubbly.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven and sprinkle freshly chopped parsley over the top of each melt. Serve immediately and enjoy your cheesy garlic bread sloppy joe melts!
Notes
- You can substitute Italian bread with French baguette or sourdough bread for different textures.
- For extra heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the beef mixture.
- Make sure to drain excess fat from the cooked beef to prevent the mixture from becoming too greasy.
- Leftover sloppy joe mixture can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated before assembly.
- Use a broiler in place of the oven to melt cheese quickly, watching carefully to avoid burning.
