Description

Beef Enoki Rolls are delicate and flavorful appetizers or main dish featuring thinly sliced beef wrapped around tender enoki mushrooms. Glazed with a savory soy-based sauce infused with garlic, ginger, and sesame oil, these rolls are pan-seared to a perfect golden brown and garnished with sesame seeds and green onions. Ideal for an elegant yet simple meal, they pair wonderfully with steamed rice or vegetables.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef Rolls

  • 1 lb (450g) thinly sliced beef (sirloin, flank steak, or rib-eye)
  • 8 oz (225g) enoki mushrooms, trimmed

Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, finely grated (optional)

For Cooking and Garnish

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for cooking)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish, optional)
  • Chopped green onions (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef and Mushrooms: Lay the thinly sliced beef flat on a clean surface. Take small bunches of enoki mushrooms (about 10-15 mushrooms per roll) and place them at one end of each beef slice.
  2. Roll the beef: Roll the beef tightly around the enoki mushrooms, securing them with toothpicks if necessary. Repeat until all beef slices are rolled up.
  3. Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, sesame oil, oyster sauce (if using), rice vinegar, sugar, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the sauce is well mixed.
  4. Heat the pan: Heat a large skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat and add the vegetable oil.
  5. Sear the beef rolls: Add the beef rolls to the pan, searing on all sides by turning occasionally, for about 5-6 minutes or until the beef is cooked through and browned. If the beef browns too fast, reduce the heat to medium.
  6. Add the sauce: Pour the prepared sauce over the cooked beef rolls in the skillet. Let it simmer for 1-2 minutes while spooning the sauce over the rolls as it thickens slightly.
  7. Serve: Remove the beef rolls from the skillet and discard any toothpicks used. Plate the rolls.
  8. Garnish and enjoy: Sprinkle with sesame seeds and chopped green onions if desired. Serve hot with steamed rice or vegetables for a complete meal.

Notes

  • Use thinly sliced beef such as sirloin, flank steak, or rib-eye for ease of rolling and tenderness.
  • If you don’t have oyster sauce, you can omit it or substitute with hoisin sauce for a different flavor.
  • Use fresh enoki mushrooms, trimming the base to remove any tough ends.
  • Keep an eye on the heat while searing so the beef doesn’t burn and remains juicy.
  • These rolls can be prepared ahead and cooked just before serving.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute soy sauce with tamari.
