Description

Crispy and golden Air Fryer Panko Asparagus Fries are a delightful and healthy snack or side dish. These asparagus spears are coated in a crunchy blend of panko and seasoned breadcrumbs, air fried to perfection for a deliciously light and crispy texture without deep-frying.

Ingredients

Scale

Asparagus

  • 1 bunch asparagus (about 1 pound or 20 spears)

Breading

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg, whisked with 1 teaspoon water
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup seasoned breadcrumbs

Additional

  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Prepare the asparagus: Wash and pat dry the asparagus spears. Bend each spear gently until it snaps at its natural breaking point to discard the tough, woody ends.
  2. Set up breading stations: Arrange three shallow dishes – one with flour, one with the whisked egg and water mixture, and one containing a blend of panko and seasoned breadcrumbs.
  3. Coat the asparagus: Dip each asparagus spear first into the flour to lightly coat, then dip into the egg wash, followed by rolling it thoroughly in the breadcrumb mixture. Shake off any excess crumbs.
  4. Prepare for air frying: Place the breaded asparagus spears on a parchment-lined baking sheet and lightly spray them with cooking spray for extra crispiness.
  5. Preheat and air fry: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C). Arrange the coated asparagus in a single layer inside the air fryer basket, avoiding overcrowding, and cook for 7 minutes until crispy and golden.
  6. Serve: Use tongs to carefully remove the cooked asparagus fries. If cooking in batches, continue cooking remaining spears until all are done. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce for a tasty appetizer or side dish.

Notes

  • Ensure the asparagus spears are dry before breading to help the coating adhere better.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket to ensure even cooking and crispiness.
  • For extra flavor, sprinkle some grated Parmesan cheese on the breadcrumb mixture.
  • Adjust cooking time slightly based on the thickness of the asparagus spears or your specific air fryer model.
  • These fries are best served immediately to enjoy their crisp texture.
